War nickels were those 5-cent coins struck between 1942 and 1945 during WWII. They contain 35% silver content.
Choose from 5, 10, or 20 nickels. These coins, because of their composition, do show a lot of patina and tarnish. The coins shown in the photos are representative of the coins you will receive, not necessarily the exact coins. The mints are mainly Philadelphia (P) and San Francisco (S).
About wartime nickels: With the entry of the United States into World War II, nickel became a critical war material, and the Mint sought to reduce its use. In October 1942, the Mint coined nickels made of an alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese. All "war nickels" were struck with a large mint mark (P, D, or S) on the reverse, appearing above Monticello.
